Austin Nichols Exclusive Interview

the site is excited to bring an exclusive interview with One Tree Hill star Austin Nichols, who plays Julian Baker, for the December 8 episode...

...Nichols was introduced to the One Tree Hill fan base as Julian Baker in the eighth episode of season six last year. Nichols’ character was brought on board to cause a stir between the show’s couple Lucas Scott and Peyton Sawyer, but Julian was soon linked romantically with the Brooke Davis character.

Austin admitted he was unsure when he was asked to be brought on board the show full-time.

“I wasn’t sure what to think when One Tree Hill creator Mark Schwahn asked me to come on full-time,” Nichols admitted. “I didn’t know about the time commitment. But I am glad I decided to stay, I have learned so much here.”

Nichols talks about his role of Julian in the seventh season of One Tree Hill and also about working with newcomer Jana Kramer as well as Sophia Bush. He also gives a sneak peek into the short film he has been shooting with Maria Bello.

Austin Nichols talks 'One Tree Hill', movies, and architecture!

by Meriam Bouarrouj - One Tree Hill Examiner

2009 has been quite a year for Austin Nichols. He became a series regular on the popular long-time drama 'One Tree Hill', began work on a new film, and even developed some additional career aspirations for himself outside of the entertainment industry. He discussed that and much more with me including what he would like to see happen with his role of Julian on 'One Tree Hill'.

Q-How has filming been for you lately?

A-Fun, it's been busy. I'm shooting a movie as well right now so I've been in between LA and Wilmington a lot. The movie is called 'Beautiful Boy', it's with Michael Sheen. It's just an incredible piece of writing about a husband and wife who find out their son was involved in a campus shooting. I play a writer who writes about the tragedy. I'm really  happy about it.

Q-This is your first full season on 'One Tree Hill', how has that been like for you?

A-It's great. It's exciting. It's different from being a guest. You feel more responsible for the show as a whole, for the final in product, as a regular. But it's been fun. As far as I can tell, this season there has been really great material and better than any season before it so it's been really cool.

Q-Had you ever seen the show before joining it?

A-No I hadn't. I really didn't watch that much television and I think the show had a certain audience, younger. But I think the audience is actually growing now. The show is kind of older and more mature and not just limited to a young audience anymore. My parents and all my friends now are watching the show and they are in love with it, and telling all their friends to watch it. So that's been cool. It's been cool to see that sort of a reaction to a show that's been on for that long. And to see that kind of an audience grow and branch out. And people love to see stuff they can relate to. There's heart in it. It's real stuff.

Q-Why do you think the Julian and Brooke relationship and storyline has stood out so much?

A-For some reason there's this it factor. When Brooke and Julian, and Sophia and I get together there's just a great chemistry that happens. There's just this really great energy there when we work together.

Q-In the most recent episode, Julian said he's not sure if he will ever be ready for kids, what do you think about that? Would you like to see Julian as a dad?

A-Yeah I absolutely would. I think it would be fun to explore as an actor and go through sort of what that's like. I think any guy at Julian's age is grappling with the same thing because when you get out of college having a few years of what you're going to with your life and ....then all of a sudden you get to a certain age and you're like, wow, I can't party like I used to, and I need to exercise and I need to get my professional life going or wow, she's a great woman, maybe I should marry her. You know all these questions start coming up at that age. It's been really cool to explore that. But yeah I think Julian wants to have children, I think he's just scared because as a man you want to be ready for those things. You want to have enough money, and you want to have a place for them to grow up healthy and you want to be able to support them and put them through college and so you don't want to dive into having kids being unprepared.

Q-Julian has been working with more of the other cast members lately. How was it to shoot the camping scene with the James, Antwon and Lee?

A-It was great. I remember having a talk with the writers and Mark Schwahn, and saying look I mean Julian isn't really interacting with anybody but Brooke and now he's a big part of the One Tree Hill world and let's get him out there and involved with everybody. And so it was nice. I got a lot of emails and text messages from family and friends saying it was so cool to see you working with other people. It was like a new view point.

Q-Julian can be funny guy but he can also be very serious at times, how do you prepare for those more serious and emotional scenes? Do you have a special technique? A-I don't know, it's weird. Working on 'One Tree Hill' has been very different from anything else I've ever worked on. I feel like in the past I was used to building up a character from scratch who's nothing like me, where now for the first time in my life I feel like I'm playing someone who's a lot like me. It's fun and interesting and when serious stuff comes up, I just sort of stick to personal things and there's somethings I have, little triggers, you know every actor has their triggers and I'll go use those things.

Q-Where would you like to see Julian and Brooke end up when 'One Tree Hill' is over?

A-You know it's interesting because on a TV show you don't know what's happening next, as opposed to a film. When Mark asked me to come back as a series regular I told him I only would if we could make a really powerful love story for Brooke and Julian. I wanted him to give them the greatest love story. I mentioned 'The Notebook' to him. I wanted him to give them that kind of love and story, a fountainhead love. And in 'The Notebook' even when they fight, it's how it is now for Brooke and Julian, it's fun to watch them fight. It's sexy. It's inspiring. That's what I told him I wanted. And he agreed. Even when they're apart, it's still interesting. So definitely in the end I want them to have the greatest happy ending ever.

Q-Was he leaning towards something else for them initially?

A-If he was, he didn't tell me. He just asked me what I thought and then he just agreed with everything I said about them. He was very happy to write to them that kind of a love story. I think because it worked in season six, he knew it could continue. When something works, it's great. It's been fun.

Q-Some of your co-stars have gone in the direction of directing? Is that something you would like to do someday or are you just content in front of the camera?

A-I absolutely do. Lately I've been shadowing directors and going to production meetings. I've done everything as a shadow in that area. I wanted to let them know that I wanted to direct. I was just sneaky about it. I just don't want to leave North Carolina and not have it happen. So hopefully it will happen soon.

Q-If you weren't acting what do you think you'd be doing?

A-Oh that would change every week for me. Sometimes I get into different things. At one point in my life I wanted to be a golfer. I used to golf when I was young. Also I wanted to be a professional water skier. Then I wanted to be a sports announcer.

Also I've really been interested in architecture lately. I really want to buy a house and fix it up. There's this incredible artist out there that inspires me, Donald Judd. All of his work is in Marfa, TX. It's a really small town that has kept his work and the buildings that he owned all around it. The town now is really influenced by his style and it's great. I was there to check out recently with some friends and it was amazing.

Q-If you could go back in time and spend a day in the life of one person who would it be?

A-It would be Donald Judd I have to say. Just to see what his head was like, by his ideas and uncompromising. When I saw his old space in Marfa, everything was left perfectly the same. Nothing was moved and I can imagine it would have been difficult to live with him. I just would like to see what that was like.

Q-Are there any updates concerning your work with Southern Gothic Productions?

A-Yeah absolutely. There's an incredible script called The Pedestrian. We're trying to make it into a movie. It's one of the best scripts I've ever read so I'm definitely gonna do everything I can to make it happen.

Exlusive: Austin Nichols Wants Brulian To Get Married!

In just one season, Austin Nichols’ Julian had quite the evolution on One Tree Hill. When he first showed up, fans worried he’d play homewrecker to Leyton’s finally-back-on relationship. Instead we ended up with perhaps the most dedicated boyfriend Sophia Bush’s Brooke has ever seen and a new leading man for the show’s seventh season.

TeenDramaWhore: What was your reaction when you found out you were being promoted to a series regular?

Austin Nichols:
Fear. To be perfectly honest, I didn’t want to do it. The thing about a television series is that you have to have faith that the material is going to be good. Because all you know is episode 1. You have no idea what episode 2-22 will contain. But after many conversations with my captain Mark Schwahn, I felt better about signing up.

TDW:
Why do you think the audience has taken such a liking to Brooke and Julian?

Nichols:
Because when we look at each other, volcanoes erupt, the earth quakes, and glitter falls from the sky.

TDW:
I know I was particularly touched by Julian’s closeness with Sam (Ashley Rickards). Do you want to see him and Brooke have a family?

Nichols:
Children!!! Absolutely. I want a litter. A whole team of little Brookes and Julians. Twins. Black ones. White ones. Brown and yellow too. Remember the show, JUST THE TEN OF US? We are going to remake that show with Brooke and Julian and their 8 kids.

TDW:
Is there any storyline you’d like to see Julian face?

Nichols
: I would like to tackle marriage. The aforementioned children. And I want to see Julian make a movie. I think it would be outstanding to make a short film and release it on the internet. A film by Julian Baker. Or by Austin Nichols.

TDW:
With the return of Julian’s dad [Episode 7.02, What Are You Willing To Lose], will we learn more about Julian’s past?

Nichols:
Well, absolutely. The most brilliant thing they could do when writing the third INDIANA JONES: The Last Crusade, was introduce Indy’s father. That glimpse into Indy’s past and to see how his behavior changes around his dad is revelatory. A guy who could have any woman, any artifact, and defeat any foe, becomes a little boy in the presence of Sean Connery. Families with checkered pasts tend to spend the present repairing that damage.

TDW:
What’s one thing that’s easy about working on a show like OTH and one thing that’s difficult?

Nichols:
Easy: no traffic here. Hard: living without In-N-Out Burger.

TDW:
You’re signed on to star in Pedestrian, which is being made by Hilarie Burton’s company, Southern Gothic Productions. What’s it like working with her in a non-OTH capacity?

Nichols:
PEDESTRIAN is a great script. And Lincoln Booth is one of those characters that doesn’t come around all that often. Working with Hilarie is a piece of cake. She is sharp and quick and a great leader.

TDW:
Tell me more about your character, Lincoln Booth. What attracted you to the role?

Nichols:
I can’t really say anything about my character except that something deep inside me started to rumble when I read him. This is either a really good sign or a disaster. We shall see!!!! :)

TDW:
You have a creative writing degree and were an avid water-skier growing up. Are these two things still a part of your life?

Nichols:
I am constantly writing. Some ideas soar. And others crash. Right now, it’s a story of a young woman who finds herself pregnant with no money and no one to depend on. She moves out to the desert to start over. I occasionally jump on some skis and do a few flips. Don’t want to forget how. But my mom [Kay Nichols] just won her 15th national title, after beating cancer a few years back.

TDW:
You also have a big interest in film. What’s one mainstream movie and one lesser-known movie you’ve seen recently?

Nichols:
500 Days of Summer is very creative. Right up my alley. Also, in the video store scene, they placed one of my DVDs right in the middle of the two actors. I was delighted. Haha!! Humpday was very interesting. Anvil! The Story Of Anvil is a brilliant rock doc. I enjoyed many parts of Inglourius Basterds. Christopher Waltz should have statues built in tribute to his performance.

TDW:
Have you thought about getting an official Twitter account?

Nichols: Twitter? What’s twitter? Sounds like a term for a titty twister.

Interview: Austin Nichols Says Things are "Gonna Get Messy" for Brulian

One Tree Hill has a new look for season 7, and one of the major parts to that overhaul was bumping Austin Nichols up to a series regular as Julian, Brooke's beloved movie producer.  The season 7 premiere saw the two making out on the beach quite a bit, and while Brulian lovers could certainly watch those two go at it all day long, Tree Hill relationships are never that simple.

I spoke to Austin about the new season of One Tree Hill, and he revealed some spoilers about what Julian is up to and which character from his past will return, what (or who) will cause some trouble for Brooke and Julian's relationship, and when we'll get to see Julian hanging out with Jamie.

-Brooke and Julian found themselves in a very good and happy place on the season 7 premiere, but Nichols says it won't stay that way for long.  "I'd love to kiss a pretty girl on the beach all the time, but it's definitely gonna get messy."

-Who will be the person throwing "a wrench into the gears" of the Brulian romance?  Fans will get a chance to find out this week, as Nichols teased Monday's episode by saying the new girl, actress and Clothes Over Bros model Alex Dupre will get in Julian's face and definitely cause some trouble for Brooke.

-Speaking of Alex, Nichols had plenty of good things to say about the actress who plays her, Jana Kramer, and it's not just because the two briefly met when they were both guest starring on Friday Night Lights.  "She's murdering her role.  She's funny and mean and heartbreaking all at the same time."

-For the first several episodes of season 7, Julian will continue to have most of his scenes with Brooke, though Nichols did mention that Julian's dad will also come back.  The movie world will also be important as Julian struggles to find out how his film world and his personal life in Tree Hill can blend together.

-As far as One Tree Hill spoilers go, Nichols revealed that this season, Julian is hard at work on a new script to use as his next movie project.  He also revealed he will start to work with cast members other than Sophia Bush starting around episode 7 or 8, and that in one episode, he has quite a few scenes with Jamie.

-When it comes to how often the male stars of One Tree Hill remove their clothes, Nichols actually appreciates the fact that this show reverses the roles, as it's usually the women whose bodies are exploited and used in film and TV, but here, it's all about the men.

-FAN QUESTION: BonesFan47 wanted to know who his favorite person to work with is.  After taking some time out to discuss the user's screen name and the fact that Nichols has a direct connection to the show Bones, he mentioned how great it is working with Sophia, but he also singled out Jackson Brundage as Jamie because Nichols is impressed by the differences in child actors.

-FAN QUESTION: PeytonMelissa wanted to know how Austin Nichols prepares for the role of Julian.  It turns out that there isn't a whole lot of prep work needed, because Julian is pretty close to the real Austin.  Working in the TV industry helps to make playing a producer a bit easier, as does the fact that is brother is a filmmaker.

Some of the SGP gang’s favorite actors

[Austin, Nicholas, and Hilarie all sitting on a bench outside.]

Hilarie Burton: Hi guys! It’s the Southern Gothic team, bringing you another vlog! We’re just spending a beautiful Monday afternoon… [Austin puts up bunny ears behind Nick’s head] Bunny ears is so funny… We’re spending another beautiful afternoon…

Nicholas Gray: [to Austin] I knew you were doing that.

HB: …not at work. [sees both boys are leaning back] Lean back. You can’t… don’t bunny ear me either! Anyway, it’s Hilarie, Nick, and Austin, and we were shooting a little bit of a short film today, and wrapped for the day, and now we’re just waxing on who our favorite characters of all time in movies are. You know, the character we saw when we were younger and were, like, ‘Oh, I want to do this for a living. That’s so cool that somebody got to do that.’ So, Austin, do you want to go first?

Austin Nichols: My favorite character is Chance, the Gardener, from “Being There.” Hal Ashby is one of my favorite filmmakers. He later became known as Chauncey Gardiner, but he was Chance the Gardner. And Peter Sellers is one of my favorite actors, first of all, /comedian/writer/amazing man. But for some reason, Chauncey Gardiner was just incredibly memorable. His bowler, and his suitcase, and his jacket, and his clothes that were just an old man’s from like, the 20s and 30s. Just the idea that they’ve got a simple guy that’s not a simple-minded man, who’s disabled mentally, can have this incredible impact on society and the world and everyone around him.

HB: Was that something you were into when you were doing “John from Cincinnati”?

AN: [nods yes]

HB: Was that your muse?

AN: [nods yes]

HB: Oh, fabulous! How neat!

[both laugh]

NG: Shirley MacLaine is in that movie.

HB: Oh, my god! Dear Shirley, I heart you. Love, Hilarie.

NG: She has a really uncomfortable moment in the movie…

AN: The sex scene? When she’s dancing for him? She’s so good.

NG: Yeah. Okay, Hilarie.

HB: I have to go next?

AN: Yup.

HB: Alright, the movie I saw when I was, probably like, eight years old, is “Funny Girl” with Barbra Streisand. [Austin starts to laugh] You’re laughing! Why are you laughing already? What’s funny about that?

AN: Because it’s Barbra!

HB: One, I wanted to be Jewish forever.

NG: Still do.

HB: Turns out I can’t get away from this WASPy thing. [laughs] No, Barbra, in that movie, you know, she plays somebody that really, really just wants to perform. It’s the story of Fanny Brice, who’s this really famous radio actress. And I used to… We weren’t allowed to listen to modern radio. We weren’t allowed to watch a lot of TV or movies growing up, but every Sunday night NPR would play these old radio shows. So, I would listen to the real Fanny Brice, and then watch this movie about her life, which Barbra Streisand is just so dazzling in. And she has this song, before she makes it, that’s “I’m the greatest star. I am by far. But no one knows it.” And I just remember going to auditions as a kid and being like, ‘Yes! No one knows but, it’s about to go down.” So yeah, that’s still the soundtrack I listen to when I need to get pumped up.

AN: Nice.

NG: I thought you were gonna do your Jewish monologue.

HB: No! I did it last night. I won’t do it now. [laughs] Whatever. Who’s yours?

NG: Well, I don’t know, I really like Sarah Michelle Gellar in “Cruel Intentions.” [Hilarie and Austin burst out laughing] No, I like, I love Eliza Dolittle. [starts laughing]

HB: [laughing] You want to play her!

NG: You know, they recently did a production of “My Fair Lady” here, in Wilmington, and I really wanted to play Eliza Dolittle, but…

HB: [still laughing] …they wouldn’t let him!

NG: … they wouldn’t let me.

AN: Nuts!

HB: I was telling him today, we should do our own YouTube version of you as Eliza Dolittle.

NG: Just you wait.

HB: [starts singing] “Just you wait, Henry Higgins, just you wait…” Anyways… Those are some of our favorites, please, send us some of yours! Can’t wait! Bye guys.

Hilarie Burton: [from behind camera] Austin, what is your favorite part about Lincoln Booth?

Austin Nichols: Well, I really… I always get really excited when I read about a character who is just passionate. People always ask me what kind of characters do you want to play, and I think they’re looking for a more concrete answer like a fighter, or a boxer, or I don’t know, a gladiator, or a writer, or something like that. But I just… I want to play people who are just incredibly… intensely passionate about what they want or what they love to do. And I feel like Lincoln is that way about his work… about photos… [starts laughing and shakes his head]

HB: He gets a lot of girls! That will be fun, right?

AN: Yeah, that’s why I wanted the part. Because he’s a ladies man and he gets models and… No, that’s awful!

[fade to later]

HB: Austin, what is your power animal?

AN: A seagull.

HB: Why?

AN: Because it’s bones are hollow…. Like me. [laughs]

HB: [gasps] That’s the saddest thing I’ve ever heard!

[Text reads: “Austin’s SoGoprah’s Book Club Pick!”]

Austin Nichols: [holds up book] This is “The Fountainhead.” This is not Southern Gothic but I don’t care. It’s incredible and I believe it’s a must for any artist. It’s about idealism, and the price of compromise. It’s incredible. So I’m going to read a passage that I find hilarious. This is actually when, um… [looks at camera] Okay, stop. [fades to later] This is when Howard Roark, our idealist, the young architect, goes to meet and ask for a job from his sort of, hero, Henry Cameron, who is now sort of a disenfranchised architect who doesn’t… He was a big name, and he was brilliant, and had the world at his fingertips and became difficult, and doesn’t get any jobs anymore, and Roark goes to ask him for a job. So, this is a great passage. Starting with Henry Cameron to Howard Roark, [reading from “The Fountainhead”]

“ ‘When did you decide to become and architect?’

‘When I was 10 years old’

‘Then you don’ know what they want so early in life. You’re lying.’

‘Am I?’

‘Don’t stare at me like that. Can’t you look at something else? Why did you decide to become an architect?’

‘I didn’t know it then but it was because I didn’t believe in God.’

‘C’mon. Talk sense’

‘Because I love this earth. That’s all I love. I love the shape of things on this Earth. I want to change them.’

‘For whom?’

‘For myself.’

‘How old are you?’

‘Twenty-Two.’

‘Where did you hear all that?’

‘I didn’t.’

‘Men don’t talk like that at 22. You’re abnormal.’

‘Probably.’

‘I didn’t mean it as a compliment.’

‘I didn’t either.’

‘Got any family?’

‘No.’

‘Work through school?’

‘Yes.’

‘In what?’

‘In the building trades.’

‘How much money have you got left?’

‘Seventeen dollars and thirty cents.’

‘When did you come to New York?’

‘Yesterday.’

Cameron looked at the white pile under his fist. ‘God damn you,’ Cameron said softly, ‘God damn you, Roark!’ Cameron, suddenly leaning forward, ‘I didn’t ask you to come here. I didn’t need any draftsmen. There’s nothing here to draft. I don’t have enough work to keep myself and my men out of the Bowery Mission. I don’t want any full visionaries starving around here. I don’t want the responsibility. I didn’t ask for it. I never thought I’d see it again. I’m through with it.’

‘I was through with that many years ago. I am perfectly happy with the drooling adults I have here who have never had anything, and never will. It makes no difference what becomes of them. That’s all I want.’

‘Why did you have to come here? You’re setting out to ruin yourself, you know that, don’t you? And I’ll help you do it. I don’t want to see you. I don’t like you. I don’t like your face. You look like an insufferable egotist. You’re impertinent. You’re too full of yourself. Twenty years ago I would have punched you in the face with the greatest of pleasure. You’re coming to work here tomorrow at nine o’clock sharp.’

‘Yes,’ Roark said, rising.

‘Fifteen dollars a week, that’s all I can pay you.’

‘Yes.’

‘You’re a damn fool. You should have gone to someone else. I’ll kill you if you go to anyone else! What’s your name?’

‘Howard Roark.’

‘If you’re late, I’ll fire you.’

‘Yes.’ Roark extended his hand for the drawings.

‘Leave these here!’ Cameron bellowed, ‘Now, get out!’”

[Austin looks at camera] That’s the fountainhead.

[Text reads: “Austin Nichols really wants you to go get ‘The Fountainhead’!”]

Filmmaker to Produce Big Drama for Tree Hill's "Leyton"?

Hilarie Burton, Austin Nichols and Chad Michael Murray

Lucas Scott may finally get a big break with one of his novels when Austin Nichols makes his way to Tree Hill as movie producer Julian Baker. We checked in with TV's former John from Cincinnati to learn more about his 10-episode One Tree Hill arc, including Julian's "voracious appetite for women." Plus: Will Nichols' coed-canoodling teach return to Friday Night Lights?

TVGuide.com: What you can reveal about your Tree Hill character?
Austin Nichols:
He's definitely a troublemaker, kind of a Jack Nicholson sort. One of those guys you love to hate. I definitely piss Lucas off quite a bit, and that's probably going to come to blows.

Are you going to have any overlap with James Van der Beek, who'll be playing a director interested in the movie?
Nichols:
We don't immediately, but I would imagine we do. The important thing to know is that I'm the producer of the movie, so I'm going to be James Van der Beek's boss.

TVGuide.com: I read that Julian and Peyton (played by Hilarie Burton) have a past connection. Is that anything you can go into?
Nichols:
I don't know why they're being so secretive about my love life on this show, but I'll tell you this: When I had my meeting with [series creator] Mark Schwann, I told him that I wanted them all! There are tons of beautiful women on this show, so hopefully Julian crosses paths with many of them. Julian has a voracious appetite.

TVGuide.com: I also hear that there's a possible romance with Brooke (Sophia Bush).
Nichols:
Time will tell, time will tell....

TVGuide.com: You played quite the heart-breaker on Friday Night Lights. Do you think Noah would ever make a return appearance?
Nichols:
I wish. I really love that show and that character. When I talked to them on the phone beforehand I said [teacher-student romance] happens every day in this country and we should definitely explore this. I know it's a hard thing to do, to bounce all these storylines, and that was probably one of the ones that fell off the table. But I hope it comes back.

TVGuide.com: When we spoke to you back then, you said that David Milch was trying to think of a way for John from Cincinnati to come back. Any updates?
Nichols:
No. At some point DreamWorks was interested in buying the idea and doing, like, a web series or something. They kind of got into a [legal] fight so that didn't really happen. Then David started doing his new series, which I actually really liked and wanted to do, and HBO was a little like, "Maybe we should keep these two apart for the next show." But David's new series, Last of the Ninth, is a cop show that takes place in 1970s New York and it's really bad-ass. As always, he'll be doing some pretty racy, cool stuff.
